Armin Hofmann (1920–2020) was a Swiss graphic designer and educator, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Swiss graphic design and a key proponent of the "Swiss Style".
In his "Graphic Design Manual" Hofmann presents a design study featuring a grid of connected circles, focusing on the resulting abstract shapes.
It has had a significant impact on the graphic design scene of the 90s and early 2000s, with iconic examples like the aphex twin and walkman logo using a very similar technique.
While there have been other excellent implementations of the system, I aimed to use rope dynamics for this project. The shapes from Hofmann's original system always reminded me of rope being wrapped around poles, which directly inspired this direction.
The underlying system is done in p5js with custom rope dynamics, p5.js-svg is used to export the resulting shapes. If you have any feedback or major problems feel free to contact me.
